Winter Animal Slide Deck

Looking for something fun to capture your toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners’ attention during Teletherapy sessions? Need a brain break from learning at home? Check out this winter animal slide deck to work on visual perceptual, sensory-motor, gross motor, receptive and expressive language skills, and more.

It’s too cold to play outside for long this time of the year so I’m constantly thinking of ways to get the kids moving indoors.

Most children love animals, right?

So today, I’m sharing a fun virtual game that combines some favorite winter animals, peek-a-boo and movement…a perfect trifecta to capture your young learners attention during teletherapy sessions.

This one is similar to the Christmas peek-a-boo game from last month so if you missed it you can grab the slide deck and read more about how these types of peek-a-boo games benefit children’s development here!

Winter Animal Slide Deck

This is a fun slide deck with a winter animal theme that can work on the following skills:

  • Visual figure ground (being able to locate something in a busy background).

  • Visual closure (Being able to identify an object when only seeing a portion of it).

  • Visual attention (waiting for the next hidden object to appear on screen).

  • Receptive and Expressive Language (could target “wh” questions, single words, beginning sounds, animal sounds, naming colors, shapes, etc.).

  • Gross motor skills/Motor Planning (imitate various movements using video, therapist or caregiver model).

  • Fine motor skills (For older students, could practice writing the first letter of each hidden object or the entire word).

Winter Animal Visual Perceptual Activities

There are 8 different winter animals hidden behind the iceberg.

  • Polar Bear

  • Penguin

  • Walrus

  • Seal

  • Moose

  • Snowy Owl

  • Rabbit

  • Whale

The first slide will have only a small part of the winter animal revealed.

The second slide will have half of the winter animal revealed.

The third slide will reveal the winter animal and have the printed word above.

You can grade this activity up/down by increasing or decreasing the speed in which you change from slide to slide.

You could also have older students practice writing the words to make their guesses or make it into a memory game and have them write as many as they can remember at the end of the game.

Winter Animal Gross Motor Activities

After each winter animal is revealed, there will be a movement slide to encourage imitation and motor planning of a gross motor action with a short video demonstrating the movements.

These slides will target 8 gross motor skills including:

  • Walk like a polar bear

  • Waddle like a penguin

  • Walk like a walrus

  • Flap like a seal

  • Walk like a moose

  • Spread your wings like an owl

  • Hop like a rabbit

  • Pose like a whale

Grade each of these movements as you feel necessary to suit your child’s developmental levels.

You can also grade up or down by increasing/decreasing the amount of time the movement is performed.

Or maybe you can test your student’s memory by having them remember the movements in order and do them every time a new movement is added.
